  • Maker-Themed Engineering and Liberal Education Symposium

By rieffelj Monday March 2015, 20:04 UTC

We invite you to submit an abstract to the Eighth Symposium on Engineering and Liberal Education which will be held at the campus of Union College in Schenectady, New York. We welcome abstract submissions on any topics that relate to how engineering integrates into a liberal arts education, and how liberal arts integrate into an engineering education.

This year’s Symposium will include a threaded series of sessions (in traditional and non-traditional formats) on “Designing and Making”. We wish to explore the interesting and productive tension between formal design methods and the more informal “Maker” movement, both of which draw on very similar concerns and energy surrounding creativity, economic globalization, and innovation. We are particularly interested in the ways that liberal education and multidisciplinary interaction contribute to design and maker culture. Descriptions for potential sessions will be added to the ELE website as they are developed.

Please submit your 250-300 word abstract here. If you would like your abstract to be considered as part of themed sessions listed on the website; or as a session proposal, workshop, lab, installation, exhibit, or some other kind of non-traditional format, please indicate this in your submission and we will be happy to work with you on your ideas.

    Here are some deadlines:

    • Abstract submission: 31 March 2015
    • Notification of acceptance: 15 April 2015
    • Symposium registration: 1 May 2015 (registration is free)
    • Symposium rate lodging reservation: 5 May 2015 (please mention the Union College Symposium on Engineering and Liberal Education when reserving)

We thank you for your interest in the symposium and look forward to seeing you in Schenectady in June.
